Nicaragua has country-wide elections every four years to vote for the Cruz Roja President! This past week, on Nicaraguan television, the Director of the Nicaraguan Red Cross denied that her son would be running for office once she stepped down.
When you consider the importance of the organization in Nicaragua, maybe it is a little less surprising. Cell phones, for example, are pre-programmed with the Red Cross phone number in case of emergency.

That’s crazy! I wonder what it would take for us to achieve that kind of importance here in the US? What functions does the Nicaraguan Red Cross oversee besides disaster relief?
