Empower Our Red Cross at the National Youth Institute, April 3rd-5th in Orlando, Florida!

This year the NYI team is hoping to see chapters from all over the country join us in the Sunshine State for an enlightening, engaging, and “en-cridibly” exciting weekend! We will be providing you with weekly NYI planning updates here on redcrossyouth.org to keep you energized and informed about the upcoming conference.  We are here [...]

My experience with the National Youth Council

What does the National Youth Council actually do? When I was a high school chapter volunteer, I had no idea. All I remember was going to the 2004 National Convention and seeing the National Youth Council walk into a room together wearing nerdy matching polo-shirts and thinking, “………….” Now I’m wearing one of those shirts!

Amazing benefits from volunteering

It is a little past 1 AM on the West Coast and I am at home for the weekend in the Bay Area. Tomorrow, I will drive for 5+ hours back to Los Angeles and resume normal college life. For now, I am sitting here in my old room where I grew up and looking [...]

Challenges and progress

My chapter is hiring a new office manager for our second office in Watertown. We just took charge in July and we are already switching staff! Our effort to find the right person the first time around didn’t work out; however, we have quite a few resumes that have come in and I’m confident we [...]

President Obama is new Honorary Chairman

Notes from the American Red Cross online museum: In 1906 the American Red Cross added a largely ceremonial office of President to its structure. In 1913, President Woodrow Wilson agreed to serve in this position, thereby establishing a tradition followed by all subsequent presidents that they become Honorary President (since 1947 “Honorary Chairman”) of the [...]

Red Cross responds to “Miracle on the Hudson”

On Thursday night, 155 passengers and crew were safely rescued after US Airways Flight 1549 landed in the frigid waters of the Hudson River. Responders from the American Red Cross in Greater New York were on the scene immediately. The chapter set up a Mass Care site at Battery Park and throughout the freezing cold [...]

School spirit used for Boston fundraiser

Last winter, in our efforts to contribute to the National Disaster Relief Fund, we launched a school-wide campaign to raise money for the Red Cross. The club initiated a contest in which the homeroom with the greatest contribution would win a “Spirit Bag,” filled with candy, pompoms, and party beads. We began the contest in [...]

Tips for cold weather

I planned to go out for a long run tonight. Turns out that you don’t need to go running in 30-degree weather very long before you realize the power of preparedness… and the value of a long-sleeve shirt. The Red Cross recently published tips for staying safe and warm during cold weather. It’s worth reading. [...]

New website launches

This weekend, the American Red Cross launched a new website at redcross.org. The design features fewer front-page links and is intended to be cleaner and easier to use. It’s been a number of years since the last redesign. What do you like? What do you think needs to be changed?
