American Red Cross President & CEO on Youth Involvement

Hi Red Crossers! I am so excited about this!  We announced back in April 2008 that Gail McGovern was joining the American Red Cross as its President & CEO.  Today, I write to announce a video that Gail recently made about the importance of Red Cross youth involvement!

I’ve had the chance to meet her a number of times. My first meeting with her was back at Harvard, after she was appointed as President but before she officially started the job. (She was a Harvard Business School professor at the time and I am a Harvard undergraduate, so I figured I would take advantage of our geographic proximity.)  Upon meeting her, I was deeply impressed by her intelligence, passion for service, warmth, and intuitive understanding of the importance of young people to the American Red Cross mission and legacy.   Her performance since then has only confirmed my initial observation.  Although she has moved offices, she has not lost her professorial habits of always wanting to learn more and ask questions, of enjoying students and young people, and of being profoundly passionate about her work.

She and her senior management team are doing an incredible job being transparent, welcoming of all ideas, and building the organizational culture and competence that has our beloved organization thriving. I am thrilled by her leadership, and excited to see her at NYI! Watch what she has to say about youth involvement! What do you think?

  1. Perfedt timing for this video as we are scheduled to hold a “Red Cross Club Orientation” trying to reach out to the many High Schools in our jurisdiction. I believe the Gail McGoverns message is very clear about the importance of youth involvement in the American Red Cross. Thank you for sharing!

  2. Absolutely! I’m excited she made the video. Good luck with reaching out to high school volunteers! If you need more resources, you can go to the “Resources” section and explore various items that might be of assistance!

  3. GREAT MESSAGE FROM GAIL! I AM THE LEADER OF TWO RED CROSS CLUBS…ONE IN AN ELEMENTARY SCHOOL, AND ONE IN A MIDDLE SCHOOL. THE SOONER WE CAN GET THESE STUDENTS INVOLVED IN THE RED CROSS THE BETTER. WE ARE TEACHING THE 7 PRINCIPLES OF THE RED CROSS AND RAISING MONEY FOR THE RED CROSS IN FUN WAYS. VOLUNTEERING FOR THE RED CROSS IS SUCH A GREAT WAY TO GET KIDS INVOLVED IN DOING THINGS FOR THEIR COMMUNITY AND FOR THEMSELVES.

Actually, if you ever want to write a story about your two Red Cross clubs, let me know and we can work on posting it here on RedCrossYouth.org so everyone can hear about the great work you are doing!

    best,
