Hey Red Crossers,
I wanted to bring to your attention an exciting opportunity for Red Cross youth to embrace and become a part of. Our country’s first lady, Michelle Obama has officially launched United We Serve, a national service initiative, with the aim of meeting community needs and making voluntary service a way of life for everyone. This nationwide initiative officially kicked off yesterday June 22 and will run for 81 days, culminating on September 11 as a “National Day of Service”. During this period, the White House and the Corporation for National and Community Service will actively encourage people to volunteer in projects that help meet the needs of their communities.
Our American Red Cross President and CEO, Gail McGovern who recently joined us at our National Youth Institute, is excited about this initiative. She invites all of Red Cross volunteers and staff to get involved…
“I’m excited for us all to work together to spread the word about the Red Cross mission and attract new volunteers. Our organization runs on the valuable service of volunteers, and the United We Serve initiative is a great opportunity not only to attract new volunteers to help us fulfill our mission, but also to reinforce with the American public that their Red Cross is THE place to utilize their talents in service to their communities. That’s why we are encouraging our chapters, Blood Services regions and Service to Armed Forces stations to be actively involved in United We Serve to draw attention to the volunteer opportunities that support the Red Cross and engage new volunteers in meaningful ways. This is also a timely opportunity to recognize our current volunteers for their involvement in Red Cross activities and encourage and sustain their continued service. Now that we’ve kicked it off, let’s get out in our communities and engage them fully in this exciting effort. “
As American Red Cross youth we all need to act during this call to serve and make the Red Cross proud this summer. Start a new service project or inspire someone new to volunteer! For specific project ideas and ways to get involved this summer, check out our resources page for new documents and tools. Share your thoughts and plans for the summer with us right here on redcrossyouth.org.
