Want to Stay Busy this Summer? Volunteer with the Red Cross!
Summer is here! For most youth, with it comes no school, no exams, and more free time. Perhaps you are thinking about sleeping late, hanging out with friends, enjoying the space and freedom that warm weather and sunshine brings.
Here’s another possibility….be a local Red Cross hero or shero!
During the last few weeks, as a NYC advisor, I have had the privilege of interviewing candidates for the open seats on the National Youth Council. I have been amazed at the talent and dedication that youth in the field put toward the Red Cross. But, you don’t have to sit on the National Youth Council to make a difference right in your own backyard.
Across the country, local Red Cross Chapters and Blood Service Regions offer a wide variety of volunteer opportunities for you to volunteer as little or as much as you’d like during the summer months. In fact, in reading the resumes of our NYC candidates, most of them started as local Red Cross heroes and sheroes: volunteering at blood drives, donating blood if 16 or older, organizing a blood drive, staffing an information table to recruit blood donors or volunteers, assisting with health and safety classes, helping chapters ensure materials are ready should a disaster strike, organizing a fund raiser to support disaster relief are just a few. The Red Cross really has something for everyone!
Check-in with your Red Cross Club, Chapter office or Blood Services region to see where your skills, talents and interests can be put to good use helping not only the Red Cross in your community but your friends and neighbors who live there! Don’t know who the contact is? Contact an NYC members to help get you in touch. Go back to school in the fall ready to share a Red Cross story with your friends and watch the good feeling of helping others spread!
