Lenawee Intermediate School District Red Cross Club
The Lenawee Intermediate School District (LISD) Red Cross Club was formed in October 2011. This was the first Red Cross Club in Lenawee County. The club was originally formed with two students.
On Friday, April 20th, the LISD Tech Center’s Red Cross Club placed 1st at the Michigan Health Occupations Students of America (HOSA) Competition. They also placed first at the regional level competition. In June, the club went on to compete at the national level. Competing students were Paige Slor, Paige Gilpin, and Jacob Thompson. The club competed in the Community Awareness event for their work in preparing Lenawee County residents for disasters and emergencies.
Working with faculty advisor Lynn Vandenbusche and Red Cross Volunteer Resources Director Stephanie Boles, the students completed several service projects since October 2011. The students’ efforts include a distribution of disaster preparedness and prevention information to 855 households in Tecumseh, Adrian, Morenci, and Hudson, as well as a fire safety presentation to Hope Center clients (servicing high functioning adults with disabilities), including a distribution of emergency preparedness backpacks. The club taught 250 students preschool through 12th grade, Hands-Only CPR, the manual pumping of the heart through chest compressions. They also supported the Washtenaw-Lenawee Chapter’s 3rd Annual GatorRaiser, which collects donations of water and Gatorade to support local and national disaster relief efforts. The club organized the first ever Red Cross Day at their tech center, teaching over 100 students first aid skills, water safety information, what to include in their family’s emergency preparedness kit, and so much more.
