Fire Safety

We interviewed NYC member, Aparna Ghosh, to find out what she and her Red Cross Club do to be prepared for a fire!
Can you tell us about a fire that has taken place on your college campus?
Aparna: In March 2008, a historic frat house on the University of Michigan campus was completely destroyed due to a fire. No one was injured, but many surrounding apartment complexes had to evacuate due to the heavy smoke as well.
What did the Red Cross do in response to this fire?
Aparna: The Red Cross was there with disaster action team volunteers who helped make sure residents were safe, and accounted for. They also had mental health professionals on hand, as well as water and gatorade for the firefighters
What do you think are the most important ways to make sure you and your family and friends are protected if a fire occurs?
Aparna: Have a plan! Make sure you and your family/friends know what to do in the case of an emergency….and make sure that you execute this if need be! Make sure that fire alarms are up to date and that there is nothing blocking the fire escape.
