Red Cross Summer Youth Volunteer Program Kicks Off in New York
Six American Red Cross Club members from New York City met at Greater New York regional headquarters in Manhattan July 2 to begin a new, eight-week summer program in Emergency Services.
“We are excited to have Red Cross high school volunteers working in Emergency Services and getting a ‘behind the scenes’ look at Red Cross disaster response,” said Amanda Crabbe, Greater New York volunteer and youth services associate. “We hope the program will be mutually beneficial, and plan to grow it in the years to come.”
Between July 8 and Aug. 30, the students will work in groups of four, and every two weeks they will rotate between four Red Cross departments—Mass Care and Logistics, Staffing and Training, Client Casework and the Emergency Communications Center.
Their projects will include preparing training materials, conducting data entry, organizing materials for volunteer deployments, cleaning emergency response vehicles and answering calls/directing inquiries made to the Emergency Communications Center.
“I am so excited to be a part of the American Red Cross,” said youth club member Aleeya Alli, who attends John Bowne high school. “With this opportunity I’ll be able to see how it all works.”
