Bellaire High School Red Cross Club Serves at Local Food Bank
Over winter break, Bellaire High School Red Cross Club members stayed hard at work, starting their days early to volunteer at the Houston Food Bank. The Houston Food Bank, the largest food bank in the nation, supplies approximately 74 million nutritious meals annually to senior centers, food pantries, soup kitchens, and households throughout southeast Texas. About 20 Bellaire Red Cross Club members sorted and packaged food items to be donated to low-income families and individuals.
Aside from volunteering at the Houston Food Bank, BHS Red Cross members have also participated in several Fire Safety Canvassing events, received and taught CPR/ AED Certification, volunteered at the Heart Walk, hosted a bake sale to raise money for the IFRC organization, created cards to be donated to Holiday Mail for Heroes, participated in Operation Gratitude, and much more.
After joining her sophomore year, member Alisa Lu recalls her experience with Red Cross, “I definitely gained a lot of skills through the many volunteering opportunities and events.” Lu said. “I was also able to build lasting friendships with a very amazing group of people.” In the many years to come, BHS Red Cross hopes to continue to grow and pursue volunteerism, both locally and globally. BHS Red Cross currently has approximately 120 members and its advisor is Ms.Decerbo. It is one of the many Red Cross clubs in the Greater Houston Area Chapter.
