School Club Collaboration Increases Blood Collection

The Millburn (N.J.)-Short Hills Chapter reports that 82 students and seven staff members donated blood at the Red Cross student/faculty/staff drive held at Millburn High School. Of these, 45 were first-time donors. Between the two drives held at the school this year, a total of 180 students had the experience of giving blood and 196 usable units of blood were collected. This was more than 40 percent higher than in any prior year. The credit for this increase in student turn-out goes to the hard-working student committee and faculty advisors who took full responsibility for recruiting donors. The student committee was made up largely of members of the Red Cross Club and Future Physicians and Nurses clubs.

High school international club helps stamp out measles

Organizing and executing a fundraiser to help children in third world countries is not an easy task, but the students of the Columbia High School International Club in White Salmon, Washington, did it and did it well. Using determination, hard work and community partners, these students banded together to raise funds for the American Red Cross International Measles Initiative.

The International Club at Columbia High School first learned of this initiative because their teacher, Shirlee Jellum and her husband, Tom, are volunteers for the Columbia River District of the Oregon Mountain River Chapter (Bend). Jellum brought a guest speaker from the Red Cross to the class and the fundraiser was sparked there. Students then came together to help raise money for the Measles Initiative. These students worked throughout their school raising funds and then turned to the community for help.

The Big River Diner in Bingen allowed students to wait tables one evening and use the tips for the fundraiser. They earned over $500. The students also participated in the HUGS Fair in White Salmon where they raised money and Hood River’s Small Planet became a project partner and gave a percentage of their sales for a day. In a little more than three months time, the students had raised more than $730.

Water, Water, Everywhere

The Youth Council of the Wyoming Valley Chapter (Wilkes-Barre, Pa.) held a disaster seminar called Water, Water, Everywhere. Youth Council members Katie Mizenko and Allison Welling coordinated the event. This seminar was also a bring a friend event and because of that the council gained five new members. Speakers included the chapter emergency services coordinator, Wayne Wolfe, and long-time disaster volunteers Gary Van Scoy and Chris Mizenko. Youth Council members also learned how the chapter responds to a disaster and the role that youth volunteers can take to serve during a disaster response.

Electric Slide-a-thon Raises Funds for Measles Vaccinations

The American Red Cross of Central Florida (Orlando) Teen Corps program hosted an electric slide-a-thon. The event took place on the center stage at the Fashion Square Mall. Youth danced non-stop to the electric slide to raise money for the Measles Initiative. An informational booth was set up to inform people about the Measles Initiative as well as American Red Cross of Central Florida services and the Teen Corps program.

Local Students Offered Emergency Response Classes

The Cincinnati (Ohio) Area Chapter teamed with Cincinnati Public Schools to provide Community Emergency Response Team (CERT) classes for local students and adults. Teen CERT provides participants with disaster preparedness training for hazards that may impact their area and trains them in basic disaster response skills such as fire safety, light search and rescue, team organization and disaster medical operations. This program involves youth and helps the Cincinnati Red Cross community grow in the number of people that are ready to react when disaster strikes.

Pennsylvania Students Join the Disaster Action Team

Dickinson College and the Cumberland County Chapter (Carlisle, Pa.) have joined forces to provide relief to area residents during a disaster. Twenty students will be working together as members of chapter Disaster Action Teams. When Dickinson College students are not responding, they will be teaching Masters of Disaster to children in the community through various after-school programs.

Heartland Chapter Celebrates Junior Red Cross 90th Anniversary

The Heartland Chapter (Omaha, Neb.) Youth Council celebrated 90 years of the Junior Red Cross by holding a spaghetti dinner, which raised $743 in support of their programs. The dinner was part of an open house at the chapter celebrating Red Cross Month. The evening included a Look Behind the Red Cross, a historical program developed by Council members.

Birthday Girl Asks for Gifts for Fire Victims Rather than for Herself

Alisha Hay, a sixth grader at Hood River Middle School, decided this year on her 12th birthday to help her community. Earlier this year a fire destroyed a home in Hay’s neighborhood and she saw how the children that lived there were devastated because all of their things were gone. She asked her friends to bring a new stuffed animal to her birthday party instead of something for her. After she gathered all the stuffed animals from her friends and family, Alisha Hays donated them to the Oregon Mountain River Chapter (Bend) to give to child fire victims. Hay is a girl scout and has taken babysitting classes from the Red Cross.

Youth Corps Holds a Knock Out Measles Fundraiser

American Red Cross of Central Florida (Orlando) Red Cross Teen Corps youth volunteers held a Knock Out Measles fundraiser—a car wash at Checkers Drive-in Restaurant. In addition to the car wash, youth sold measles pins for $2 each during March is Red Cross Month.

Youth-to-Youth Training Becomes an Annual Event

On President’s Day the Youth Council of the Wyoming Valley Chapter (Wilkes-Barre, Pa.) trained 10 Youth Council members in First Aid and CPR/AED. Not only was the entire class comprised of youth, it was taught by two of the chapter’s trained youth health and safety volunteer instructors. The Day of Training will now be on the Youth Council calendar every year for new members and recertification of existing members.
